@ The Deck, Newport, Rhode Island
Robyn's Review
07/09
@ The Deck *, formerly West Deck, is located down wharf from O'Brien's and has a great outdoor bar and patio area for the summer season. The patio area is a great place to grab lunch or dinner on a nice day. It's right on the water and you can watch all rich people entering the private dock to get to their yachts. Their bar food is very reasonably priced and it's not too shabby either! (I recommend the Hot Wings... yum!) The service is not the greatest, but I feel as though I say that with every Newport restaurant. The bathrooms at @ The Deck are, unfortunately, very sub-par. They're really more of a nice version of an outhouse... dirty and out of stock of necessities!
The bar does get packed quickly on weekends and it becomes difficult to fight your way to the bartender. There is a second bar just behind the main one and most of the times it's easier to get your drink there. Drinks are a little pricey, but I think you paying a little extra for the atmosphere is worth it since it's one of the few great outdoor bars in Newport. Most of the people you find @ The Deck on weekends is the overflow crowd from Dockside since it is right next door and is usually very crowded and comes with a hefty cover charge. I have never been to Dockside but I don't really ever feel the need to since @ The Deck is *usually* less crowded, *usually* doesn't have a cover and you can still hear the live music from next door.
For some reason I am still unsure of, you'll also find a lot of “Newport Costumes” here. (What is a “Newport Costume” you ask? Well... let me show you.) So be forewarned - you may be blinded by all of the green and pink patterns as you enter! (Not that I have anything against this, it's just that growing up in Colorado my whole life this was quite a shock to me when I moved out here... you just don't wear that stuff in CO!)
But all that said, I have to say that @ The Deck is one of my favorite bars to go to on a hot Summer night!
* @ The Deck is really 2 separate establishments - you first enter the outdoor bar and patio area, but there is also a fairly nice restaurant inside. Read about my other experience: @ The Deck restaurant review.
