Sachuest Town Beach in the Newport area, better known to locals as Second Beach, is probably the most popular of the three local big beaches. Although technically in Middletown, the beach is located just a couple of miles from Newport.

Second Beach draws crowds throughout the summer, especially on a hot summer weekend day. I have always been partial to this sandy, sunny haven. Maybe it is because I grew up on this beach, or maybe it is because of its great waves and beautiful view of the ocean and St. George's School in the distance. In addition, unlike Newport's Easton's Beach (aka First Beach) it does not smell like rotting seaweed. Plus, Second Beach is well sheltered from any heavy road traffic.

One thing to know is that beaches in the Newport, RI area are neither free nor cheap. On weekdays the fee to park a car is $10, while on weekends it can be as high as $20. However, if you will be frequenting Second Beach or Third Beach (also in Middletown), then it may be worth your while to purchase a season pass for about $50 for residents, or $90 for non-residents. Or if you are staying in Newport, you can take the RIPTA trolley, Newport's local-area public transportation.

Second Beach offers a concession stand from which you can grab a bite if packing a lunch is not your style; also, the Del's Lemonade truck is usually parked at "surfers' end" (self-explanatory) for a refreshing afternoon drink. I feel that this beach is the epitome of the New England beach experience.
