@ The Deck, Newport, Rhode Island
Robyn's Review
07/09
@ The Deck *, formerly West Deck, is located down wharf from O'Brien's and has a great outdoor bar and patio area and also a fairly nice restaurant indoors. The atmosphere is very nice - white table linens, 2 main dining rooms, and an open kitchen. Their tables & chairs however are a bit awkward because they are too short (at least this was the case with the table we sat at). My legs actually cramped when I stood up after my meal!
The food was good, but in my opinion, it was nothing to write home about. We ordered the Calamari and Steamers appetizers and the Calamari is not fried so it is very unappetizing to look at. It's served with Hummus and Pita bread which was my favorite part of the dish. The Steamers were good, but we were ruined by the Bucket of Steamers we ordered from The Red Parrot last weekend (one word - awesome!).
I ordered the Salmon which was definitely the best meal at our table. The salmon was wrapped in thin potato strips and came with Mushroom Duxelles inside (very similar to a Beef Wellington). My friend ordered the Surf & Turf which looked very good but only had a 4oz Filet served with it which is honestly very tiny. But to their credit, the Filet was prepared perfectly medium-rare.
It's not as though we had a bad experience at @ The Deck, it's just that it was pricey and didn't stand out among the other pricey restaurants in Newport. I can't say that I will be going back - I'd much rather spend my money at Cafe Zelda's.
* @ The Deck is really 2 separate establishments - this review focuses on the restaurant inside, but you can read about my other experience: @ The Deck bar review.
