With the loss of Loca, Mexican food on the island is hard to come by other than Perro Salado. With the opening Diego’s this past year, Newporters finally have a wider selection of Mexican cuisine to choose from. Let’s get right to the point, Diego’s is fantastic. While the locale is small (it is used to be a sandwich shop) the dinner atmosphere is reminiscent of an intimate cantina you could imagine finding south of the border ? without the drug cartels to worry about. Due to the size, it may be tough getting a seat, but there is typically room at the bar and the turnover appeared moderately fast.
I am huge fan of margaritas, but I hate the ordinary margaritas you typically find that are loaded with some imitation high-fructose corn syrupy mix that makes your teeth feel like you need to see the Dentist the next day. Diego’s is fresh squeezed lime all the way baby, and they are really, really good. I was especially happy to see some great beers on tap ? Hoegarden is there, need I say more? Besides the bar, certain nights of the week are BYOB which gives you the best of both worlds in Newport.
My first night there, I tried the fish taco special ? generous helpings of fresh Mahi Mahi lightly fried and served up in warm flour tortillas with your choice of sauces. Outstanding! They also served with an amazing salad of fresh mini-tomatoes and jicama which was out of this world and I have yet to see it back on the menu. BRING IT BACK PLEASE!
Now Perro Salado has a larger fancier menu that is equally as good, but Diego’s truly sold me on their prices. You get a lot for what you pay for and you don’t pay a lot. But alas, with all good things in Newport they seem to quickly disappear rather quickly (I’m talking to you Asterisk and how you changed your amazing espressos martinis to something out of a crappy bottle!)... Get to Diego’s soon, you won’t regret it!
