The Gas Lamp is a restaurant located downtown where The Garden used to be. On a very busy (but cold) weekend, we were happy to see the place wasn't packed, and we wouldn't have to wait to be seated. As expected we were promptly seated, and our waitress quickly came over and took our drink order. I noticed it was quite cold inside and they not only had the door propped open, but they had a giant 8' x 6' panel slid open in the front to let more cold air inside. I looked around at the other guests and noticed half of them were wearing coats! When I was about to ask that the doors be closed, someone beat me to the punch and they sealed the place up. 5 minutes later the hostess decided it would be a good idea to open the door again, and again I was beaten to the punch by another cold angry customer.
Our cocktails arrived which were excellent, but were overpriced by about 25%. Our waitress took our order then disappeared for…. 40 minutes! After our long wait, we were informed our wait would be starting over now because the printer went down and our order was lost. FINALLY our meals arrived and our waitress, who was very apologetic, asked if we needed anything else. We asked for some catsup, and extra tartar sauce. You would figure after waiting an hour for our meal because of technical difficulties that we would be the first priority, but that was far from the truth. 8 minutes later we had to flag her down and request the catsup & tartar sauce again.
With all that being said, the food was excellent. My dad insists that Coddington Brewery has the best calamari on the island, but he's never been to The Gas Lamp! I think the food there is so good that despite the slow service it will keep me coming back.
The food deserves 4 scoops; the service and atmosphere deserve 1.
