There was a break in the rain and it looked to be a gorgeous night so I headed out to Pineapples on the Bay. Pineapples on the Bay is an outdoor dining area on Goat Island in the Hyatt Regency Hotel. It's quite the relaxing spot with great views of the sun setting over the Newport Bridge, the Newport Harbor Lighthouse, and boats sailing by. Every evening they do a free Champagne toast at sunset involving a shot from a cannon (which can be quite a surprise if you're not expecting it!). The atmosphere is definitely not to be missed! It's on par with the experience at Castle Hill, but has live music and is quite a bit cheaper.
On Monday evenings it's Neighborhood Night with half price appetizers, drink specials, live music and a raffle. The menu is a bit limiting but the food is good - we shared the Grilled Beef Teriyaki and the Cumin-Lime Chicken appetizers and I had the Outboard Burger as my entree with cheddar cheese and grilled carmelized pineapples. It was slightly overdone but still fantastic. I would recommend skipping the Cole Slaw however... not too tasty AT ALL!
The mixed drinks are pretty good and are very tropical so they just enhance the island experience. They were $7.50 on special, $8.50 regular, which honestly isn't too bad anymore for a mixed drink. They did run out of the most popular drink of the night though - the Bay Breeze, which is truly fabulous... fruity, light, and plenty of liquor - so I had to switch to the Rhode Island Runner and everyone at the table commented that it reminded them of Bubble Tape.
And now we get to service... what can I say?!? It was slow but she did have a lot of tables to cover... Monday nights are definitely busy! But the food did arrive in a timely manner and drinks were always full - which really is the most important thing in my book! (Word is that Sunday's are pretty quiet however and there is still live music!)
Time for the rating, are you ready? Pineapples on the Bay gets the big one from me ... 5 SCOOPS! I hope to make this a Monday night tradition - what a great way to start off the week!
