After receiving an inside scoop from one of our readers to checkout the Rhumbline restaurant, I was stoked. I love finding great restaurants, especially ones I had no idea existed. Rhumbline is a colonial style house located right smack in the middle of a Newport suburb called "The Point". It was a little eerie as you walk in because you feel like your walking into someone else's home, but the warm New England atmosphere and the recognizable tunes from the piano player make you feel instantly at ease.
After reviewing so many places, you quickly become critical of everything right from the beginning. Since everything was great so far, I decided to spoil myself and get a Chopin Vodka on the rocks. My server quickly brought out my drink and to my surprise I received at least a double for the price of one. Could this be a mistake or just a good omen?
Everything on the menu looked delicious and my eye was immediately caught by the fried goat cheese and risotto starter. After having Norey's unbelievable fried goat cheese appetizer with fried spinach I had to try Rhumbline's. Unfortunately, it was just OK. No big deal, Norey's sets the bar too high on this tasty snack anyway. For my entrée I chose the BBQ salmon on a mixed vegetable hash. Again to my disappointment the entrée's and salad left something to be desired. It is really too bad because everything else about Rhumbline is very appealing.
I am jealous about not having a restaurant like Rhumbline in my own neighborhood because for those that live in The Point I can see it as a favorite spot where everyone knows your name. You can bet I will be back, maybe not for dinner, but definitely for drinks with friends. I want to give 4 scoops to Rhumbline, but missing the mark on food for a restaurant is so huge that I am forced to give it 3.
